Glen Ord Distillery is a whisky distillery located in the village of Muir of Ord, in the Scottish Highlands. It is one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland, with a rich history dating back to its founding in 1838.

History[edit | edit source]

The distillery was established in 1838 by Thomas Mackenzie of Ord. The location was chosen due to its proximity to the fertile barley fields of the Black Isle and the availability of pure water from the nearby White Burn. Over the years, Glen Ord Distillery has undergone several expansions and modernizations to keep up with the growing demand for its whisky.

Production[edit | edit source]

Glen Ord Distillery uses traditional methods to produce its single malt whisky. The process begins with the malting of locally sourced barley, which is then mashed and fermented. The fermented wash is distilled in copper pot stills, and the resulting spirit is aged in oak casks for a minimum of three years, although many of Glen Ord's whiskies are aged for much longer periods.

The distillery is known for its use of long fermentation times and slow distillation processes, which contribute to the complex and rich flavors of its whiskies. Glen Ord produces both peated and unpeated whiskies, catering to a wide range of palates.

Products[edit | edit source]

Glen Ord Distillery is best known for its single malt whisky, which is marketed under the brand name "The Singleton of Glen Ord." The Singleton range includes various expressions, each with its own unique flavor profile. Some of the popular expressions include:

  • The Singleton of Glen Ord 12 Year Old
  • The Singleton of Glen Ord 15 Year Old
  • The Singleton of Glen Ord 18 Year Old

In addition to its single malt offerings, Glen Ord also produces whisky for use in blended Scotch whiskies.

Visitor Centre[edit | edit source]

Glen Ord Distillery has a visitor centre that offers guided tours, allowing visitors to learn about the whisky-making process and the history of the distillery. The tours typically include a visit to the malting floors, the mash house, the still house, and the warehouses where the whisky is aged. Visitors also have the opportunity to sample some of the distillery's whiskies.

Ownership[edit | edit source]

The distillery is currently owned by Diageo, one of the largest producers of alcoholic beverages in the world. Diageo acquired Glen Ord Distillery in 1985 and has since invested in its modernization and expansion.
