Gomortega keule is a medium-sized evergreen tree that can grow up to 30 meters in height. The tree has a straight trunk and a dense, rounded crown. The bark is smooth and grayish, while the leaves are simple, opposite, and leathery, with a glossy green appearance. The leaves are elliptic to oblong, measuring 5 to 10 cm in length.

The flowers of Gomortega keule are small, yellowish, and fragrant, appearing in clusters. They are hermaphroditic, containing both male and female reproductive organs. The flowering period occurs in the spring.

The fruit of Gomortega keule is a drupe, approximately 3 to 4 cm in diameter, with a yellow, fleshy exterior. The fruit is edible and has a sweet, aromatic flavor. It is traditionally consumed by local populations and can be used to make jams and other preserves.

Habitat and Distribution[edit | edit source]

Gomortega keule is native to the temperate forests of central Chile. It thrives in humid, coastal environments and is typically found at altitudes ranging from 100 to 500 meters above sea level. The species prefers well-drained soils and is often associated with other native Chilean trees such as Nothofagus and Laureliopsis.

Conservation Status[edit | edit source]

Gomortega keule is classified as an endangered species due to habitat loss and fragmentation. The primary threats to its survival include deforestation for agriculture and urban development. Conservation efforts are underway to protect the remaining populations, including the establishment of protected areas and reforestation projects.

Uses[edit | edit source]

The wood of Gomortega keule is highly valued for its quality and durability. It is used in the construction of furniture and other wooden products. Additionally, the fruit is harvested for its culinary uses, and the tree is sometimes cultivated for ornamental purposes due to its attractive appearance.
