Gonococcus
Gonococcus is a type of bacteria that causes gonorrhea, a sexually transmitted infection. It is also known as Neisseria gonorrhoeae and is characterized by its ability to cause infection in the genitourinary tract, rectum, and throat.
Overview[edit | edit source]
The Neisseria gonorrhoeae bacterium, or gonococcus, is a Gram-negative bacterium responsible for the sexually transmitted infection known as gonorrhea. This bacterium is typically found in pairs (diplococci) and is known for its ability to resist the body's natural defenses.
Transmission[edit | edit source]
Gonococcus is primarily transmitted through sexual contact, including vaginal, anal, and oral sex. It can also be transmitted from mother to child during childbirth. The bacteria can infect the mucous membranes of the genitourinary tract, rectum, and throat.
Symptoms[edit | edit source]
In many cases, gonococcus infection may not cause any symptoms, especially in women. When symptoms do occur, they can include pain or burning during urination, increased vaginal or penile discharge, and bleeding between periods in women. If the infection spreads, it can cause more serious health problems, including pelvic inflammatory disease in women and epididymitis in men.
Diagnosis[edit | edit source]
Diagnosis of a gonococcus infection typically involves a laboratory test to identify the bacteria. This can be done through a urine test or a swab of the affected area.
Treatment[edit | edit source]
Treatment for gonococcus infection typically involves antibiotics. It's important for sexual partners to be treated as well to prevent re-infection.
Prevention[edit | edit source]
Prevention strategies for gonococcus infection include using condoms during sex, getting regular testing for sexually transmitted infections, and getting vaccinated if a vaccine is available.
