Grammy Award
Grammy Award[edit | edit source]
The Grammy Award, or simply Grammy, is an accolade by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS) of the United States to recognize outstanding achievement in the music industry. The annual presentation ceremony features performances by prominent artists, and the presentation of those awards that have a more popular interest.
History[edit | edit source]
The first Grammy Awards ceremony was held on May 4, 1959, to honor and respect the musical accomplishments by performers for the year 1958. The trophy depicts a gilded gramophone. The Grammys are considered one of the four major annual American entertainment awards, along with the Academy Awards (film), the Emmy Awards (television), and the Tony Awards (theater and Broadway).
The Grammy Awards are awarded in a series of categories, each of which isolate a specific contribution to the music industry. The "General Field" are four awards which are not restricted by genre.
- Album of the Year is awarded to the performer and the production team of a full album.
- Record of the Year is awarded to the performer and the production team of a single song.
- Song of the Year is awarded to the writer(s)/composer(s) of a single song.
- Best New Artist is awarded to a promising breakthrough performer who releases, during the Eligibility Year, the first recording which establishes the public identity of that artist.
Eligibility and Voting[edit | edit source]
To be eligible for a Grammy, a recording must be released in the United States between October 1 of the previous year and September 30 of the current year. Members of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, both voting and non-voting, as well as record companies, may submit entries for consideration. Once a work is entered, review sessions are held by more than 150 experts from the recording industry to ensure that the entry is placed in the correct category.
Criticism and Controversy[edit | edit source]
The Grammy Awards have faced criticism over the years. Some critics argue that the awards are more of a popularity contest than a measure of true artistic merit. Others have pointed out the lack of diversity in the nominations and winners, particularly in the major categories.
Notable Winners[edit | edit source]
Some of the most awarded artists in Grammy history include:
- Georg Solti - 31 Grammy Awards
- Quincy Jones - 28 Grammy Awards
- Beyoncé - 28 Grammy Awards
- Alison Krauss - 27 Grammy Awards
