From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Grocery is a store or shop where food and other items for the household are sold. Groceries can range from small corner shops to large supermarkets and online stores. The term "grocery" can also refer to the items sold in these stores.

History[edit | edit source]

The concept of the grocery store has evolved over time, from small general stores in the 19th century to the large supermarkets and online grocery stores of today. The first self-service grocery store, Piggly Wiggly, was opened in 1916 in Memphis, Tennessee by Clarence Saunders.

Types of Grocery Stores[edit | edit source]

There are several types of grocery stores, including:

  • Supermarkets: These are large self-service grocery stores that offer a wide variety of food and household products. They often have departments for meat, fresh produce, dairy, and baked goods.
  • Convenience stores: These are small stores that carry a limited selection of staple grocery items and are often open long hours for the convenience of shoppers.
  • Discount stores: These stores offer a wide variety of products, including groceries, at discounted prices.
  • Online grocery stores: These are websites or apps where customers can order groceries for delivery or pickup.
