Gyre refers to a large system of circular ocean currents formed by the Earth's wind patterns and the forces created by the rotation of the planet. The term can also apply to any large system of circulating water in an ocean, sea, or lake. Gyres are critical components of the Earth's climate system, influencing weather patterns and the distribution of marine life. They are primarily driven by the Coriolis effect, which is a result of the Earth's rotation, and are further shaped by landmasses that redirect currents and wind.

Formation and Characteristics[edit | edit source]

Gyres form when large-scale wind patterns push ocean water towards the equator from the poles and along the equator. The Coriolis effect then deflects these currents to the right in the Northern Hemisphere and to the left in the Southern Hemisphere, creating a circular motion. The interaction between the wind-driven surface currents and the Earth's rotation results in the formation of gyres. These systems can be vast, spanning thousands of kilometers across and reaching depths of several hundred meters.
