Hair Growth

Hair growth refers to the process by which human hair expands in length and volume. This biological phenomenon is a result of the activity within the hair follicles, the small sacs in the skin that produce hair. Hair growth occurs in a cycle that includes phases of growth (anagen), cessation (catagen), and rest (telogen).

Phases of Hair Growth[edit | edit source]

The hair growth cycle is divided into three main phases:

  1. Anagen Phase: This is the active growth phase of hair follicles, which can last between two to six years. During this period, cells in the root of the hair are dividing rapidly, adding to the hair shaft. Hair typically grows at a rate of approximately 1 cm per month during the anagen phase.

  3. Telogen Phase: The final phase is the telogen phase, a resting period that lasts about three months. During this time, the hair does not grow but remains attached to the follicle. At the end of the telogen phase, the hair falls out, and a new hair begins to grow in its place, marking the start of a new anagen phase.

  • Genetics: Genetic predisposition plays a significant role in determining hair density, growth rate, and length.
