Heat-not-burn product

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Heat-not-burn products (HnB) are a form of nicotine delivery that, as the name suggests, heats tobacco without setting it aflame. These devices aim to create a smokeless experience for nicotine users, with the intention of reducing some of the health risks associated with traditional smoking. HnB products heat the tobacco at a lower temperature compared to conventional cigarettes, reducing the production of harmful and potentially harmful compounds. The process generates a nicotine-containing aerosol that the user inhales. Popular HnB products include Philip Morris International's IQOS and British American Tobacco's glo.

Mechanism of Action[edit | edit source]

These products function through the use of specially designed tobacco sticks or capsules that are heated rather than combusted. The heating element within the device brings the tobacco to a temperature high enough to release nicotine and other chemicals in vapor form but low enough to prevent combustion.

Health Implications[edit | edit source]

Although HnB products are marketed as a safer alternative to conventional cigarettes, the full health implications of these products remain under investigation. While HnB products generate fewer harmful compounds than traditional cigarettes, they still expose users to toxicants that can harm health.

Regulation and Public Health Concerns[edit | edit source]

The regulation of HnB products varies worldwide, with some countries treating them similarly to other tobacco products and others imposing specific restrictions. Public health advocates express concern over the potential for HnB products to attract non-smokers or former smokers, given the marketing of these products as a safer alternative to traditional cigarettes.
