The Best Foods brand is sold in the United States west of the Rocky Mountains, and also in Asia, Australia, and New Zealand.

Hellmann's and Best Foods are produced by Unilever.

History[edit | edit source]

In 1905, Richard Hellmann (1876–1971) emigrated from Vetschau, Germany to New York City, where in August 1905, he opened up a small delicatessen on Columbus Avenue. The condiments – a mayonnaise salad dressing – soon became so popular that Hellmann began selling them in "wooden boats" that were used for weighing butter.

In 1913, Hellmann decided to sell his mayonnaise in glass jars that he had designed. To distinguish his product, he featured a "Blue Ribbon" around the neck of the jar; this became so prominent that the product became known as "Hellmann's Blue Ribbon Mayonnaise".

Products[edit | edit source]

Hellmann's and Best Foods are marketed in a similar way. Their logos and web sites resemble one another, and they have the same English slogan: "Bring out the best".

Most of the products sold under the Best Foods brand are available under the Hellmann's brand. The two brands were previously sold by the Bestfoods Corporation, which also sold several other food products in addition to Hellmann's and Best Foods mayonnaise. Bestfoods, known as CPC international before 1997, was acquired by Unilever in 2000.

In 2018, Hellmann's launched a new product line that uses only cage-free eggs: Hellmann's Carefully Crafted Dressing and Sandwich Spread.
