High technology
High technology, often abbreviated to high tech (adjective forms: high-technology, high-tech, hi-tech) is technology that is at the cutting edge: the most advanced technology currently available. It is often used in reference to micro-electronics, rather than other technologies. The adjective form, "high-tech" became popular in use in the 1980s and 1990s.

The term is used broadly in many different contexts, such as in reference to technology companies, or to describe cutting-edge technology or high-end, state-of-the-art products.

The phrase was used in a 1958 The New York Times article advocating "atomic energy" for Europe: "...Western Europe, with its dense population and its high technology..." The term, high tech, became popular in use in the 1980s and 1990s.

In a high-tech society, technology is not just prevalent but is also highly visible and a major driver of change. In these societies, technological change is rapid and social change is equally quick, as new ideas and innovations are adopted and disseminated.
