Human alphaherpesvirus 3

Human alphaherpesvirus 3 (also known as Varicella-zoster virus or VZV) is one of the eight herpesviruses known to infect humans. It is the causative agent of chickenpox and shingles.

Human alphaherpesvirus 3 is a member of the Herpesviridae family, specifically the Alphaherpesvirinae subfamily. It is classified as a dsDNA virus, meaning it has a double-stranded DNA genome.

Structure[edit | edit source]

The virus is enveloped and has an icosahedral capsid. The genome is linear and approximately 125,000 base pairs in length. The envelope contains glycoproteins which are essential for the virus to bind to and enter host cells.

Life Cycle[edit | edit source]

The life cycle of Human alphaherpesvirus 3 involves entry into the host cell, replication of the viral genome, assembly of new virus particles, and release of these particles to infect other cells. The virus enters the host cell by binding to receptors on the cell surface and fusing with the cell membrane. Once inside the cell, the virus uncoats and the viral DNA is transported to the nucleus where it is replicated. New virus particles are assembled in the nucleus and then released from the cell by budding through the cell membrane.

Human alphaherpesvirus 3 causes two distinct diseases: chickenpox and shingles. Chickenpox is a common childhood illness characterized by a rash and fever. Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is a painful skin rash that usually occurs in adults who have had chickenpox in the past.

Prevention and Treatment[edit | edit source]

Vaccination is the primary method of preventing infection with Human alphaherpesvirus 3. The varicella vaccine is effective at preventing chickenpox, and the shingles vaccine can reduce the risk of developing shingles. Antiviral drugs such as acyclovir can be used to treat infections.
