Hydraulic
Hydraulic refers to a technology and science of using pressurized fluid, often in the context of mechanical properties and applications. The term comes from the Greek words 'hydor' meaning water, and 'aulos' which means pipe.
Overview[edit | edit source]
Hydraulic systems use a incompressible fluid, such as oil or water, to transmit forces from one location to another within the system. They are used in a wide range of applications, from the brakes in cars, to the control systems in large aircrafts.
Principles[edit | edit source]
The basic principle of hydraulics is based on Pascal's law which states that any pressure applied to a fluid inside a closed system will transmit that pressure equally in all directions throughout the fluid. This allows for a multiplication of force and can be used to amplify a mechanical advantage.
Applications[edit | edit source]
Hydraulic systems are used in a wide range of applications. Some of the most common include:
- Hydraulic press: This is a machine press that generate a compressive force using a hydraulic cylinder.
- Hydraulic brakes: These are used in many vehicles and rely on the hydraulic principle to function.
- Hydraulic power networks: These are used in many industrial settings to generate power.
