Imago is the final and fully developed stage of an insect, typically winged. In psychoanalysis, it refers to an idealized concept of a loved one, formed in childhood and retained unconsciously into adult life.

Etymology[edit | edit source]

The term "imago" is Latin for "image", and was historically used in psychoanalysis by Carl Jung. In entomology, the term refers to the last stage of metamorphosis in an insect.

In entomology, the imago is the final stage of development of an insect, after the last ecdysis of an immature stage. The imago stage is often referred to as the adult stage.

In Psychoanalysis[edit | edit source]

In psychoanalysis, an imago refers to an unconscious, idealized mental image of someone, especially a parent, that influences a person's behavior. Carl Jung used the term to describe the way children form an internal image of their parents (or other influential figures) which they carry into adulthood.
