Immersion finswimming

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Immersion finswimming is a competitive aquatic sport that involves the use of a monofin and a snorkel. The sport is governed by the World Underwater Federation (CMAS) and is one of the four disciplines of finswimming, the others being surface finswimming, apnea finswimming, and relay races.

History[edit | edit source]

Immersion finswimming originated in the mid-20th century, alongside the development of the monofin and the snorkel. The sport quickly gained popularity in Europe and Asia, and has since spread worldwide. The first World Championships in finswimming were held in 1976, and immersion finswimming has been included in the program since the beginning.

Equipment[edit | edit source]

The primary equipment used in immersion finswimming is the monofin and the snorkel. The monofin is a type of swimfin that is attached to both of the swimmer's feet. This design allows for a more efficient swimming technique, as the swimmer can generate more propulsion with each kick. The snorkel is used to allow the swimmer to breathe while their face is submerged in the water.

Technique[edit | edit source]

In immersion finswimming, the swimmer is completely submerged in the water for the entirety of the race. The swimmer uses a dolphin kick technique, which involves a simultaneous downward push with both legs, while the body follows a sinusoidal pattern. This technique is more efficient than the flutter kick used in traditional swimming, as it allows for greater speed and less drag.

Competitions[edit | edit source]

Immersion finswimming competitions are held at both national and international levels. The most prestigious competition is the Finswimming World Championships, which is held every two years. Other major competitions include the European Championships and the Asian Championships.
