Izmir is a metropolitan city in the western extremity of Anatolia and the third most populous city in Turkey, after Istanbul and Ankara. It is located in the Gulf of Izmir, by the Aegean Sea. It is the capital of Izmir Province.

Izmir's history is known to have been one of the principal mercantile cities of the Mediterranean Sea for much of its history, dating back to the ancient city of Smyrna. It was taken over by the Ottoman Empire in 1415. The city has a rich heritage of Greek, Armenian, Jewish, and Levantine influences, which is evident in its vibrant culture and architecture.

The economy of Izmir is diverse, covering sectors from agriculture and fishing to manufacturing and technology. It is one of Turkey's primary ports for exports and has a free zone near the port that attracts international business. The city also hosts several annual trade shows at the Izmir International Fair.
