Jack nuts
Jack Nuts or Jacknut is a type of fastener used in various applications, including automotive, marine, and electronics. They are also known as blind jack nuts, blind threaded inserts, or threaded inserts.
Overview[edit | edit source]
Jack Nuts are designed to provide a strong, reliable connection in a blind or through-hole application. They are typically made of steel, stainless steel, or aluminum, and are available in a variety of sizes and thread types. The unique design of a jack nut allows it to be installed from one side of a workpiece, making it an ideal solution for applications where access to the back side is limited or not possible.
Design and Function[edit | edit source]
The design of a Jack Nut includes a threaded insert and a flange at one end. The flange provides a large bearing surface that distributes the load over a greater area, reducing the risk of material deformation. The threaded insert is designed to accept a bolt or screw, providing a secure, vibration-resistant connection.
To install a jack nut, a special tool is used to pull the threaded insert into the flange, causing the back side of the jack nut to expand and grip the inside of the hole. This creates a strong, permanent connection that can withstand high loads and vibration.
Applications[edit | edit source]
Jack Nuts are used in a wide range of applications, including:
- Automotive: Jack nuts are used in various automotive applications, such as attaching trim, molding, and other components.
- Marine: In marine applications, jack nuts are used to secure equipment and fixtures to boat hulls and decks.
- Electronics: Jack nuts are often used in electronics to secure components and assemblies.
- Construction: In construction, jack nuts are used to attach fixtures and fittings to walls and ceilings.
Advantages[edit | edit source]
The main advantages of using Jack Nuts include:
- Easy installation: Jack nuts can be installed from one side of a workpiece, making them ideal for blind or through-hole applications.
- Strong connection: Once installed, jack nuts provide a strong, vibration-resistant connection.
- Versatility: Jack nuts are available in a variety of sizes and thread types, making them suitable for a wide range of applications.
