Kroger is an American retail company founded by Bernard Kroger in 1883 in Cincinnati, Ohio. It is the United States' largest supermarket by revenue and the second-largest general retailer. Kroger is also the fifth-largest retailer in the world.

Bernard Kroger established the company in Cincinnati in 1883. The son of a merchant, he ran his business with a simple motto: “Be particular. Never sell anything you would not want yourself.”

Operations[edit | edit source]

As of 2020, Kroger operates, either directly or through its subsidiaries, 2,750 supermarkets and multi-department stores. Kroger's headquarters are in downtown Cincinnati. It maintains markets in 35 states and the District of Columbia, with store formats that include hypermarkets, supermarkets, superstores, department stores, and 170 jewelry stores.

Kroger's employees are mostly represented by collective bargaining agreements and many are represented by the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) union.

Financials[edit | edit source]

For the fiscal year 2019, Kroger reported earnings of US$1.659 billion, with an annual revenue of US$122.286 billion, an increase of 1.0% over the previous fiscal cycle.
