Death of Sanda Dia[edit | edit source]
The death of Sanda Dia, a 20-year-old student at KU Leuven, occurred on December 7, 2018, following a hazing ritual conducted by the Reuzegom fraternity. This tragic event sparked widespread outrage and led to significant discussions about hazing practices in Belgium.
Background[edit | edit source]
Sanda Dia was a promising student of engineering at KU Leuven, one of Belgium's most prestigious universities. He was known for his dedication to his studies and his active participation in university life. Dia was of Senegalese descent and had moved to Belgium with his family.
The Hazing Ritual[edit | edit source]
The hazing ritual, known as "baptism," was organized by the Reuzegom fraternity, a student society with a reputation for elitism and secrecy. The initiation process involved several days of grueling tasks and humiliations. During the ritual, Dia and other pledges were subjected to extreme conditions, including being forced to consume excessive amounts of alcohol and fish oil, and being made to stand in icy water for extended periods.
Medical Emergency and Death[edit | edit source]
On December 5, 2018, Sanda Dia was taken to the hospital after collapsing during the hazing activities. He was found to be suffering from severe hypothermia and multiple organ failure. Despite medical intervention, Dia's condition deteriorated, and he died two days later on December 7, 2018.
Legal Proceedings[edit | edit source]
The death of Sanda Dia led to a criminal investigation into the actions of the Reuzegom members. Several fraternity members were charged with involuntary manslaughter and degrading treatment. The case highlighted the need for stricter regulations and oversight of student organizations in Belgium.
Impact and Reactions[edit | edit source]
The incident prompted a national debate on the culture of hazing and the responsibilities of universities in overseeing student activities. KU Leuven faced criticism for its handling of the situation and subsequently implemented new policies to prevent similar incidents in the future.
