Landmark Education
Landmark Education, now known as Landmark Worldwide or simply Landmark, is a company offering personal development programs. Founded in 1991 by several of the trainers and staff of Werner Erhard and Associates (WEA), it has its roots in the teachings of Werner Erhard's Erhard Seminars Training (est), which was a prominent self-help movement in the 1970s and 1980s. Landmark has developed a range of programs aimed at personal growth, professional excellence, and improving the quality of participants' personal and professional relationships.
History[edit | edit source]
Landmark was established after the dissolution of Werner Erhard and Associates, amidst controversies surrounding its founder, Werner Erhard. The company was initially formed by former employees and trainers of WEA, who sought to preserve and build upon the methodologies and teachings of Erhard's seminars. Over the years, Landmark has expanded its offerings, including the Landmark Forum, an intensive three-day seminar that serves as the cornerstone of its program suite.
Programs[edit | edit source]
The most well-known program offered by Landmark is the Landmark Forum. This program is designed to bring about positive and permanent shifts in the quality of one's life, through lectures, discussions, and exercises. Participants are encouraged to examine their life's beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors and are challenged to take responsibility for their life's outcomes. Other programs include the Advanced Course, Self-Expression and Leadership Program, and various seminars focused on specific areas such as relationships, communication, and productivity.
Controversies[edit | edit source]
Landmark Education has been the subject of controversy and criticism, primarily concerning its recruitment practices, the psychological intensity of its programs, and the claims it makes about the benefits of participation. Critics have described its methods as manipulative and likened its operations to those of a cult. However, supporters and many participants report profound personal and professional transformations as a result of their involvement with Landmark's programs.
Impact[edit | edit source]
Despite the controversies, Landmark has established a significant global presence, with offices in more than 20 countries and programs delivered in over 125 cities worldwide. It has attracted a diverse participant base, including individuals seeking personal growth, as well as corporations interested in leadership and development training for their employees. Landmark's methodologies and success stories have been featured in various media outlets, though its practices remain polarizing.
