History[edit | edit source]

Lao Gan Ma was created by Tao Huabi (陶华碧), who was born in a poor village in Guizhou, China. She started her business by running a small noodle shop in the city of Guiyang. In 1996, she started to make chili sauce for her customers, which quickly became popular. In 1997, she closed her noodle shop and established Laoganma Special Flavour Foodstuffs Company to focus on producing chili sauces.

Products[edit | edit source]

Lao Gan Ma offers a variety of chili sauces, including Chili Oil with Black Bean, Spicy Chili Crisp, and Hot Chili Sauce. The sauces are known for their rich flavor, which is achieved by using a unique blend of spices and ingredients such as fermented soybeans, peanuts, and Sichuan peppercorns.

Popularity[edit | edit source]

Lao Gan Ma has gained a cult following not only in China but also in many other countries. It is often used as a condiment for dishes like noodles, dumplings, and rice. Many people also use it as an ingredient in cooking to add a spicy and savory flavor to their dishes.

Despite its popularity, Lao Gan Ma has been involved in several controversies. In 2020, Tencent, a Chinese multinational technology conglomerate, sued Lao Gan Ma for unpaid advertising fees. However, it turned out that Tencent had been the victim of a scam by impostors posing as Lao Gan Ma's marketing team.
