Least Concern (LC) is a conservation status assigned by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) to species that have been evaluated but do not qualify for any other categories such as Critically Endangered, Endangered, Vulnerable, Near Threatened, or Conservation Dependent. Species categorized as Least Concern are widespread and abundant.

Criteria[edit | edit source]

The designation of Least Concern is assigned when a species has been evaluated against the IUCN criteria and does not meet the thresholds for Critically Endangered, Endangered, Vulnerable, or Near Threatened. This category is used to indicate that a species does not currently face any significant threat that could result in its extinction in the near future.

Significance[edit | edit source]

While the Least Concern status indicates that a species is currently stable, it does not mean that the species is free from any threats. Habitat loss, climate change, and other ecological changes can still affect these species. Regular monitoring and reassessment are required to ensure that these species do not move into a higher risk category.

Examples[edit | edit source]

Many species fall under the Least Concern category, including the House Sparrow, the Brown Rat, and the Cabbage White Butterfly. These species are common in various parts of the world and do not currently face significant threats.

Conservation[edit | edit source]

Although Least Concern species are not the primary focus of conservation efforts, maintaining their habitats and monitoring their population trends is essential. This ensures that any potential threats can be identified and mitigated before they have a significant impact on the species' status.
