A light source is any device that emits radiation in the visible spectrum as a form of light. Light sources are employed in a variety of applications including illumination, communication through optical signals, and aesthetic purposes in both residential and commercial settings.

- Medical and Scientific Applications - Specialized light sources like ultraviolet lamps in medical imaging and infrared lamps in night vision technologies.

While light sources are essential for modern society, they also have health and environmental impacts. Overexposure to artificial light has been linked to sleep disorders and other health issues. Environmentally, the production and disposal of artificial light sources, especially those containing hazardous materials like mercury, pose significant challenges.
