List of cities in Virginia‏‎

The Commonwealth of Virginia is a state located in the Southern region of the United States. It is divided into 95 counties and 38 independent cities, which are considered county-equivalents for census purposes. This article provides a list of the cities in Virginia.

Independent Cities[edit | edit source]

Independent cities in Virginia are separate jurisdictions from the counties that surround them. They are equivalent to counties for census purposes. Here are some of the independent cities in Virginia:

  • Alexandria: Located along the western bank of the Potomac River, Alexandria is known for its rich history and beautifully preserved 18th and 19th-century architecture.
  • Norfolk: Home to the largest Navy base in the world, Norfolk is a waterfront city in southeastern Virginia.
  • Richmond: As the capital city of Virginia, Richmond is rich in history with a growing arts scene.

Cities within Counties[edit | edit source]

In addition to independent cities, there are also cities that are politically located within counties. Some of these include:

  • Roanoke: Known as the "Star City of the South," Roanoke is located in the Roanoke County and is known for its vibrant outdoor scene and cultural attractions.
  • Lynchburg: Located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Lynchburg is known as the "City of Seven Hills."
