London's Air Ambulance

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

London's Air Ambulance is a British registered charity that operates an air ambulance service dedicated to responding to serious trauma emergencies in and around London. Using a helicopter by day and rapid response vehicles by night, the service performs advanced medical interventions at the scene of the incident in life-threatening, time-critical situations.

History[edit | edit source]

London's Air Ambulance was founded in 1989 in response to a report by the Royal College of Surgeons, which documented unnecessary deaths from trauma and criticised the care that seriously injured patients received in the UK. The charity was initially funded by the National Health Service, British Telecom, and the Helicopter Emergency Medical Service. It has since been funded through charitable donations and corporate sponsorship.

Operations[edit | edit source]

The service operates 24 hours a day, providing rapid medical intervention to save lives of the city's critically injured. By providing advanced trauma care at the scene, the air ambulance can provide treatments normally only found in a hospital emergency department. The service operates two helicopters and a number of rapid response cars.

Clinical governance[edit | edit source]

The London's Air Ambulance service is registered with the Care Quality Commission and is required to meet a set of national standards of quality and safety.

Funding[edit | edit source]

The service is funded through a combination of private donations, corporate sponsorships and grants from the National Health Service. The charity also raises funds through various fundraising events and initiatives.
