Maggie's Centres

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Maggie's Centres are a network of drop-in centres across the United Kingdom and Hong Kong that provide support for individuals affected by cancer. Founded in 1995 by Maggie Keswick Jencks and Charles Jencks, the centres aim to create a caring environment where people can receive emotional support, information, and practical advice. They are not meant to replace conventional cancer therapy but rather complement it. The centres are located near existing NHS hospitals but operate independently.

The charity responsible for promoting, building, and running the centres is officially known as the Maggie Keswick Jencks Cancer Caring Trust, but it is commonly referred to as Maggie's. The buildings that house the centres have been designed by renowned architects such as Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, and Richard Rogers. This reflects the belief of Maggie Keswick Jencks and Charles Jencks in the uplifting power of architecture.

Maggie's has notable patrons, including Frank Gehry, Jon Snow, Kirsty Wark, and Sarah Brown, wife of former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown. The charity's CEO is Laura Lee, who was Maggie's cancer nurse. The President of the charity is Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.

The first Maggie's Centre opened in Edinburgh in 1996 within the Western General Hospital. Designed by Richard Murphy, it is located in a converted stable block. Since then, Maggie's Centres have expanded to other locations in the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Tokyo, and Barcelona.
