Microvolt

A microvolt (μV) is a unit of electric potential or voltage, equal to one millionth (10-6) of a volt. It is a derived unit from the SI used to measure small voltage differences in electronic circuits and components.

Definition[edit | edit source]

The microvolt is defined as one millionth of a volt, the standard unit of electric potential in the SI. The symbol for microvolt is μV. The prefix "micro-" is derived from the Greek word "μικρός" (mikros), meaning small.

Usage[edit | edit source]

Microvolts are commonly used in the fields of electronics and electrophysiology. In electronics, they are used to measure small voltage differences in circuits and components. In electrophysiology, microvolts are used to measure the electrical activity of cells, such as neurons and cardiomyocytes.

Measurement[edit | edit source]

Microvolt measurements are typically made using a voltmeter or oscilloscope. These devices can accurately measure voltage differences in the microvolt range.
