Minimum
Minimum is a term used in mathematics to describe the smallest value in a set or range of values. It is a fundamental concept in fields such as calculus, statistics, and optimization theory. The minimum can be a local or global concept, depending on whether it is the smallest value in a certain range or the smallest value overall.
Definition[edit | edit source]
In mathematics, the minimum of a function is the smallest value that the function takes at a point within its domain. For a set of numbers, the minimum is the smallest number in the set. For example, the minimum of the set {3, 5, 1, 4} is 1.
Local and Global Minimum[edit | edit source]
A local minimum is the smallest value of a function in a certain range, while a global minimum is the smallest value of the function overall. In other words, a local minimum is a point where the function is lower than at all nearby points, while a global minimum is a point where the function is lower than at all points in its domain.
Applications[edit | edit source]
The concept of a minimum is used in many areas of mathematics and science. In calculus, it is used to find the lowest point on a curve. In statistics, it is used to find the smallest value in a data set. In optimization theory, it is used to find the best solution to a problem.
