Native Americans In The United States
Native Americans in the United States are the indigenous peoples in North America within the boundaries of the present-day continental United States, parts of Alaska, and the island state of Hawaii. They are composed of numerous, distinct tribes, states, and ethnic groups, many of which survive as intact political communities.
History[edit | edit source]
The history of Native Americans in the United States began in ancient times tens of thousands of years ago with the settlement of the Americas by the Paleo-Indians. Anthropologists and archeologists have identified and studied a wide variety of cultures that existed during this era. Their subsequent contact with Europeans had a profound impact on their history of the people.
Culture[edit | edit source]
The culture of Native Americans is rich and varied. Each tribe has its own unique traditions, customs, and languages. Many tribes have preserved their histories by oral traditions and artwork, spanning many centuries before the arrival of Europeans.
Health[edit | edit source]
Health issues in the Native American community include a higher-than-average rate of alcoholism, diabetes, and other health problems. The Indian Health Service (IHS), an agency within the Department of Health and Human Services, is responsible for providing federal health services to Native Americans.
Education[edit | edit source]
Education for Native Americans in the United States is provided by public schools, tribal schools, and Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) schools. There are challenges to education within the Native American community, including the preservation and teaching of native languages.
Legal Status[edit | edit source]
The legal status of Native Americans in the United States is based on the fact that they are a unique group with their own laws and customs. This status is recognized and upheld by the U.S. Constitution.
