Simeticone
(Redirected from Phazyme)
Simeticone is an antifoaming agent used to alleviate the symptoms of excessive gas in the gastrointestinal tract, commonly referred to as flatulence or bloating. It is a mixture of silicon dioxide and polydimethylsiloxane.
Etymology[edit | edit source]
The term "Simeticone" is derived from the words "silicon", "methyl", and "cone", which refer to its chemical composition.
Uses[edit | edit source]
Simeticone is primarily used to treat conditions related to excessive gas in the gastrointestinal tract. These conditions include flatulence, bloating, and fullness. It is also used in some cases to aid in the preparation for abdominal ultrasound or X-ray by reducing gas shadows.
Mechanism of Action[edit | edit source]
Simeticone works by changing the surface tension of gas bubbles in the stomach and intestines, which allows for the coalescence of smaller bubbles into larger ones. This makes it easier for the body to expel the gas through belching or flatulence.
Side Effects[edit | edit source]
Simeticone is generally considered safe and side effects are rare. However, some individuals may experience mild stomach cramps or nausea.
