Earring is a piece of jewelry that is worn on the earlobe or any other external part of the ear. Earrings are worn by both sexes and have been used by different civilizations in different times.
History[edit | edit source]
The history of earrings is a varied one with numerous variations of the earring appearing throughout history. The oldest earrings ever discovered by archaeologists were found in royal graves in Iraq and date back to around 2500 BC.
Types of Earrings[edit | edit source]
There are several types of earrings, including:
- Stud earrings - The main characteristic of stud earrings is the appearance of floating on the ear or earlobe without a visible (from the front) point of connection.
- Hoop earrings - Hoop earrings are circular or semi-circular in design and look very similar to a ring.
- Dangle earrings - These are designed to flow from the bottoms of the earlobes, and are available in various lengths from a centimeter or two, all the way to brushing the shoulders.
- Barbell earrings - Barbell earrings get their name from their resemblance to a barbell, generally coming in the form of a metal bar with an orb on either end.
Health Risks[edit | edit source]
While earrings can be a fashionable accessory, there are also potential health risks associated with wearing them. These can include allergic reactions, infections, tearing, and keloids.
