Precipitate
Precipitate is a term used in Chemistry to describe a solid that forms and settles out of a liquid mixture. The formation of a precipitate is often used to confirm the presence of a certain ion in a solution.
Formation[edit | edit source]
The formation of a precipitate is a chemical reaction, and it is observed when the solution becomes supersaturated. This can occur when the solution is cooled or when a reagent is added that reduces the solubility of the solid.
Uses[edit | edit source]
Precipitation reactions are used in many areas of chemistry and biology. For example, they are used in qualitative inorganic analysis to determine the presence of certain ions in solution. They are also used in water treatment to remove unwanted ions from water.
