Estradiol undecylate
(Redirected from Primogyn Depot)
Estradiol undecylate is a synthetic, steroidal estrogen that is used in hormone therapy. It is a long-acting ester of estradiol, the primary female sex hormone. Estradiol undecylate is not currently marketed in any country, but it was previously available as a medication in France and possibly other countries.
Pharmacology[edit | edit source]
Estradiol undecylate is a prodrug of estradiol, which means it is inactive itself but is converted into the active hormone estradiol in the body. It is administered by intramuscular injection and has a very long duration of action due to its long fatty acid ester.
Chemistry[edit | edit source]
Estradiol undecylate is a synthetic estrane steroid and a derivative of estradiol. It is an estradiol ester, or a prodrug of estradiol. The undecylate ester is attached to the 17-beta hydroxyl group of estradiol, which makes the molecule more lipophilic and increases its half-life.
History[edit | edit source]
Estradiol undecylate was previously marketed in France under the brand name Progynon Depot 100, but it is no longer available. It is not known if it was marketed in other countries.
