Retailer

A retailer is a business or person that sells goods or commodities directly to consumers. Retailers are part of an integrated system called the supply chain. A retailer purchases goods or products in large quantities from manufacturers or importers, either directly or through a wholesaler, and then sells smaller quantities to the consumer for a profit. Retailing can be done in either fixed locations like stores or markets, door-to-door or by delivery.

Types of Retailers[edit | edit source]

There are several types of retailers which can be classified according to their size, type of service they provide, and the retail sector they belong to. These include:

  • Department Stores: These are large stores stocking many varieties of goods in different departments. Examples include Macy's and Sears.
  • Supermarkets: These are large self-service stores selling food and household items. Examples include Walmart and Tesco.
  • Warehouse Stores: These are retailers that offer low-cost, often high-quantity goods piled on pallets or steel shelves. Examples include Costco and Sam's Club.
  • Specialty Stores: These are retailers that focus on selling a particular product category. Examples include Foot Locker (athletic footwear) and GameStop (video games).
  • E-tailers: These are retailers that operate on the internet. Examples include Amazon and eBay.
