Savoy affair

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Savoy Affair is a historical event that took place in the 19th century, involving the territories of Savoy and Nice in the context of the Italian unification process. The affair is a significant episode in the history of France and Italy, as it led to the annexation of these territories by France.

Background[edit | edit source]

The Savoy Affair originated from the Treaty of Turin signed on March 24, 1860, between the Kingdom of Sardinia and the Second French Empire. The treaty was a result of diplomatic negotiations between Napoleon III of France and Count Cavour, the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Sardinia.

Treaty of Turin[edit | edit source]

The Treaty of Turin stipulated that the Kingdom of Sardinia would cede the territories of Savoy and Nice to France. In return, France agreed to support the cause of Italian unification, a political and social movement aiming to consolidate the different states of the Italian peninsula into a single state, the Kingdom of Italy.

Annexation and Aftermath[edit | edit source]

The annexation of Savoy and Nice by France was confirmed through a plebiscite held in April 1860. The majority of the inhabitants of these territories voted in favor of the annexation, although the fairness and legitimacy of the plebiscite have been a subject of debate among historians.

The Savoy Affair had significant implications for the balance of power in Europe. It strengthened the position of France, while also paving the way for the unification of Italy, which was officially proclaimed in 1861.
