Shipping
Shipping is the physical process of transporting commodities, goods, and cargo by land, sea, or air. The term shipping originally referred to transport by sea but has been extended in American English to refer to transport by land or air as well. "Logistics", a term borrowed from the military environment, is also used in the same sense.
History[edit | edit source]
Shipping has been an important part of history since the earliest days of civilization. People used to travel and transport goods by boat across the sea, rivers, and lakes. The Ancient civilizations such as the Egyptians, Phoenicians, Greeks, and Romans all made significant contributions to shipping technology.
Types of Shipping[edit | edit source]
There are several types of shipping, each with its own methods and purposes. These include:
- Freight transport: This is the physical process of transporting commodities, goods, and cargo by land, sea, or air.
- Containerization: This involves using standard-sized containers that can be loaded and unloaded, stacked, transported efficiently over long distances, and transferred from one mode of transport to another.
- Bulk shipping: This is the shipping of goods that are not packaged, but rather loaded directly into the ship's hold. Examples of bulk shipping items include oil, grain, and coal.
- Express shipping: This is a method of shipping where the goods are transported by air and delivered quickly.
Shipping Industry[edit | edit source]
The shipping industry is a key element of the global economy. It is responsible for carrying the vast majority of world trade. Companies in the shipping industry handle the shipment of cargo around the world, and their operations can include one or several modes of transport.
Shipping Regulations[edit | edit source]
Shipping is regulated by various international, regional, and national bodies. These include the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the International Air Transport Association (IATA), and national bodies like the Federal Maritime Commission in the United States.
