Sidemount
Sidemount is a scuba diving equipment configuration which has scuba sets mounted alongside the diver, below the shoulders and along the hips, instead of on the back of the diver. It originated among cave diving and technical diving communities, and has become increasingly popular for recreational scuba diving.
History[edit | edit source]
The origins of sidemount diving are rooted in the need for maneuverability within the tight confines of cave systems. Early sidemount systems were often self-made rigs, and it was largely an underground practice within the cave diving community. In the 1990s, standardized commercial products started to appear.
Equipment[edit | edit source]
Sidemount diving configuration requires a specific set of equipment. This includes the diving cylinders, which are typically smaller than those used in back-mounted configuration. The cylinders are attached to the diver's harness with clips, allowing them to be moved around to adjust for comfort and balance.
The diving regulators used in sidemount diving are typically the same as those used in other forms of scuba diving. However, the configuration of the hoses is often different, to allow for easier access and management of the regulators.
The buoyancy compensator device (BCD) in sidemount diving is typically a wing-style BCD, but specifically designed for sidemount configuration. It provides buoyancy control and also serves as the attachment point for the cylinders.
Training[edit | edit source]
Training for sidemount diving is offered by many diving certification agencies, including PADI, NAUI, and TDI. The training includes both theory and practical components, covering topics such as equipment configuration, buoyancy control, emergency procedures, and specific diving techniques.
Advantages and Disadvantages[edit | edit source]
Sidemount diving offers several advantages over back-mounted configuration. These include easier equipment transportation on land, greater comfort in the water, and increased gas supply for longer dives. However, it also has some disadvantages, such as increased complexity of equipment setup and management, and the need for specific training.
