Simulation

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

(Redirected from Simulating)

Simulation is a method that replicates the operation of a real-world process or system over time. It is used in many contexts, such as safety engineering, testing, training, education, and video games. Simulations can be used to show the eventual real effects of alternative conditions and courses of action.

Definition[edit | edit source]

Simulation is the imitation of the operation of a real-world process or system over time. The act of simulating something first requires that a model be developed; this model represents the key characteristics, behaviors and functions of the selected physical or abstract system or process. The model represents the system itself, whereas the simulation represents the operation of the system over time.

Types of Simulation[edit | edit source]

There are several types of simulation, including:

  • Computer simulation: A computer simulation or a computer model is a computer program that attempts to simulate an abstract model of a particular system. Computer simulations have become a useful part of mathematical modeling of many natural systems in physics, chemistry and biology, human systems in economics, psychology, and social science and in the process of engineering new technology, to gain insight into the operation of those systems, or to observe their behavior.
  • Training simulation: Training simulations are simulations in which we learn a new skill or strategy. This category includes flight and military simulations.
  • Process simulation: Process simulation is used for the design, development, analysis, and optimization of technical processes such as: chemical plants, chemical processes, environmental systems, power stations, complex manufacturing operations, biological processes, and similar technical functions.

Uses of Simulation[edit | edit source]

Simulation is used in many contexts, such as safety engineering, testing, training, education, and video games. Often, computer experiments are used to study simulation models. Simulation is also used with scientific modelling of natural systems or human systems to gain insight into their functioning. Simulation can be used to show the eventual real effects of alternative conditions and courses of action.
