Sinuatrial nodal artery
Sinuatrial Nodal Artery
The Sinuatrial Nodal Artery (also known as the SA Nodal Artery) is a small blood vessel in the heart that supplies the Sinoatrial Node with oxygenated blood. It is a branch of either the Right Coronary Artery or the Left Circumflex Artery, depending on the individual's coronary circulation.
Anatomy[edit | edit source]
The Sinuatrial Nodal Artery typically arises from the Right Coronary Artery in about 60% of individuals, and from the Left Circumflex Artery in the remaining 40%. It follows the path of the Superior Vena Cava and the Right Atrium to reach the Sinoatrial Node.
Function[edit | edit source]
The primary function of the Sinuatrial Nodal Artery is to supply the Sinoatrial Node, the natural pacemaker of the heart, with oxygenated blood. This ensures the regular rhythm of the heart and the efficient pumping of blood throughout the body.
Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]
Blockage or damage to the Sinuatrial Nodal Artery can lead to Sinoatrial Node Disease or Sick Sinus Syndrome, conditions characterized by irregular heart rhythms. Treatment options include medication, pacemaker implantation, or in severe cases, heart surgery.
