Spheroidal

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Spheroidal refers to the shape of an object that is approximately spherical, but not perfectly so. It is often used in the context of astronomy and geology to describe the shape of celestial bodies and geological formations, respectively.

Definition[edit | edit source]

A spheroid, or ellipsoid of revolution, is a quadric surface obtained by rotating an ellipse about one of its principal axes; in other words, an ellipsoid with two equal semi-diameters. If the ellipse is rotated about its major axis, the result is a prolate (elongated) spheroid, shaped like an American football or rugby ball. If the ellipse is rotated about its minor axis, the result is an oblate (flattened) spheroid, shaped like a lentil.

In Astronomy[edit | edit source]

In astronomy, spheroidal shapes are often used to describe the shape of planets and other celestial bodies. For example, the Earth is often described as an oblate spheroid, as it is slightly flattened at the poles and slightly bulging at the equator due to its rotation.

In Geology[edit | edit source]

In geology, spheroidal weathering is a form of chemical weathering that affects jointed bedrock and results in the formation of concentric or spherical layers of highly decayed rock.
