Subperiosteal

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Subperiosteal is a term used in anatomy and medicine to describe a location or process that occurs beneath the periosteum, the dense layer of connective tissue that covers the surfaces of bones.

Anatomy[edit | edit source]

The periosteum is a membrane that covers the outer surface of all bones, except at the joints of long bones. It is divided into an outer "fibrous layer" and inner "cambium layer" (or "osteogenic layer"). The subperiosteal region, as the name suggests, is located beneath this membrane.

Subperiosteal Processes in Medicine[edit | edit source]

In the field of medicine, the term subperiosteal is often used to describe processes or procedures that occur beneath the periosteum.

Subperiosteal Hematoma[edit | edit source]

A Subperiosteal hematoma is a collection of blood that forms beneath the periosteum. This can occur as a result of trauma or injury to the bone, and can cause significant pain and swelling.

Subperiosteal Abscess[edit | edit source]

A Subperiosteal abscess is a pocket of pus that forms beneath the periosteum, usually as a result of a bacterial infection. This condition can cause severe pain and swelling, and may require surgical intervention to drain the abscess and treat the underlying infection.

Subperiosteal Implants[edit | edit source]

In dentistry, subperiosteal dental implants are a type of implant that is placed beneath the periosteum, on the bone of the jaw. These implants are typically used in patients who do not have enough healthy jawbone to support traditional endosteal implants.
