Survivor is a term used to describe an individual who has lived through a significant event or ordeal, often involving life-threatening circumstances or extreme hardship. The term is often used in the context of cancer survivors, natural disaster survivors, and survivors of war or genocide.

The term "survivor" is derived from the Latin word supervivere, which means "to live beyond". In its most basic sense, a survivor is someone who continues to live, despite experiencing an event or condition that could have resulted in death.

Survivors of natural disasters are individuals who have lived through events such as earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, and wildfires. These individuals may have experienced significant loss, including the loss of their homes, possessions, and loved ones.

War and Genocide Survivors[edit | edit source]

Survivors of war and genocide are individuals who have lived through violent conflicts and mass killings. These individuals may have experienced extreme trauma, including physical injury, psychological trauma, and the loss of family and community.

Survivorship[edit | edit source]

Survivorship refers to the process of living beyond a significant event or ordeal. This can involve physical recovery, psychological healing, and the rebuilding of one's life. Survivorship can also involve advocacy and activism, as many survivors use their experiences to raise awareness and effect change.
