Tall stature
Tall stature refers to a height that is significantly above the average for a person's age, sex, racial group, or family. Growth is typically described in terms of percentiles on a growth chart.
Causes[edit | edit source]
Tall stature can be familial (genetic, runs in families), or it can be a symptom of certain medical conditions. Some of the medical conditions that can cause tall stature include Marfan syndrome, Klinefelter syndrome, homocystinuria, Sotos syndrome, and Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome.
Diagnosis[edit | edit source]
The diagnosis of tall stature is usually based on a physical examination and a review of the person's medical and family history. The doctor may also order tests to rule out underlying medical conditions that can cause tall stature.
Treatment[edit | edit source]
The treatment for tall stature depends on the underlying cause. If the tall stature is due to a medical condition, the condition is treated. If the tall stature is familial, no treatment is usually necessary.
