Tonotopy is the spatial arrangement of where sounds of different frequency are processed in the brain. It is a fundamental principle of auditory system organization, where different frequencies are represented in specific areas of the auditory cortex. This organization allows for the precise perception and interpretation of sound frequencies.

Tonotopy is observed in various parts of the auditory system, including the cochlea, the auditory nerve, and the auditory cortex. The concept is similar to the retinotopy in the visual system, where different parts of the visual field are processed in specific areas of the visual cortex.
Cochlea[edit | edit source]
The cochlea is a spiral-shaped organ in the inner ear that plays a crucial role in hearing. It is tonotopically organized, with high-frequency sounds being processed at the base and low-frequency sounds at the apex. This gradient of frequency sensitivity is due to the mechanical properties of the basilar membrane, which varies in stiffness along its length.

The auditory nerve carries the electrical signals generated by the hair cells in the cochlea to the brain. The fibers of the auditory nerve are also tonotopically organized, maintaining the frequency-specific information as they project to the brainstem and higher auditory centers.

The auditory cortex is located in the temporal lobe of the brain and is responsible for processing auditory information. It is divided into several regions, each with a tonotopic map. These maps are arranged such that neurons responding to similar frequencies are located near each other. This organization allows for the precise decoding of complex sounds, such as speech and music.
