Traveling

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Traveling refers to the movement of people between distant geographical locations. Travel can be done by foot, bicycle, automobile, train, boat, bus, airplane, ship or other means, with or without luggage, and can be one way or round trip. Travel can also include relatively short stays between successive movements, such as tourism, vacationing, visiting friends and family, business travel, and other types of travel.

History[edit | edit source]

The origin of travel is likely to be lost to history, as it predates written records. However, it is known that the earliest form of travel was for migration and trade. The development of transportation has meant that travel has become easier and more accessible. The modern age of travel began in the 19th century with the development of the steam engine and the railway.

Types of Travel[edit | edit source]

There are many different types of travel, including tourism, business travel, commuting, and migration. Each of these types of travel has different purposes and occurs for different reasons.

Tourism[edit | edit source]

Tourism is travel for pleasure or business; also the theory and practice of touring, the business of attracting, accommodating, and entertaining tourists, and the business of operating tours. Tourism may be international, or within the traveler's country.

Business Travel[edit | edit source]

Business travel is a more specific term than travel, implying a more focused and planned journey. It usually refers to travel undertaken for work or business purposes, as opposed to other types of travel, like vacationing or visiting friends and family.

Commuting[edit | edit source]

Commuting is regular travel between one's place of residence and place of work or full time study. It sometimes refers to any regular or often repeated traveling between locations, even when not work-related.

Migration[edit | edit source]

Migration is a form of travel that involves a person moving from one place to another with the intentions of settling, permanently or temporarily, at a new location (geographic region). The movement is often over long distances and from one country to another, but internal migration is also possible.

Travel Safety[edit | edit source]

Travel safety is a major concern for many travelers. This can include everything from ensuring that one's health is in good condition to travel, to avoiding dangerous situations in unfamiliar locations. Travel insurance, which provides coverage for various travel-related emergencies, is also an important aspect of travel safety.
