Phenazopyridine

Phenazopyridine is a medication used to alleviate symptoms related to the urinary tract such as pain, burning, and discomfort, often due to infection, injury, or irritation. It is a urinary tract analgesic and works by providing a direct local analgesic effect on the lining of the urinary tract.

Phenazopyridine is typically taken orally and is often used in conjunction with an antibiotic to treat urinary tract infections (UTIs). It doesn't cure the infection itself, but it can help alleviate the symptoms while the antibiotic treats the underlying infection.
Side Effects[edit | edit source]
Common side effects can include headache, dizziness, and upset stomach. A characteristic side effect is that it can cause urine and sometimes sweat to turn a bright orange to red color.
Precautions[edit | edit source]
It's important for patients to tell their healthcare provider about any other medications they're taking before starting phenazopyridine, as it can interact with certain other drugs. Those with kidney disease or liver disease may need to avoid this medication or take it at a lower dosage.
