Word processor

Word processor is a software application used for the production (including composition, editing, formatting, and possibly printing) of any sort of printable material. Word processor may also refer to a type of stand-alone office machine, popular in the 1970s and 1980s, combining the keyboard text-entry and printing functions of an electric typewriter with a dedicated processor (like a computer processor) for the editing of text.

The history of word processing is the story of the gradual automation of the physical aspects of writing and editing, and then to the refinement of the technology to make it available to corporations and Individuals.

Types of Word Processors[edit | edit source]

There are two types of word processors: Hardware Word Processors and Software Word Processors.

Hardware Word Processors[edit | edit source]

Hardware word processors, also known as dedicated word processors, were popular in the early 1970s and 80s. They were standalone devices that combined the keyboard and printing functions of an electric typewriter with a dedicated processor for editing text.

Software Word Processors[edit | edit source]

Software word processors, which are used on a computer or mobile device, have largely replaced hardware word processors. They offer a wide range of features for creating, editing, and formatting documents.
