The Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area is a census area located in the U.S. state of Alaska. As of the 2010 census, the population was 5,588. It is part of the unorganized borough of Alaska and therefore has no borough seat. Its largest communities are the cities of Galena, in the west, and Fort Yukon, in the northeast.
Geography[edit | edit source]
The Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area is the largest census area in the United States by area, covering 147,805 square miles. It is bordered by the North Slope Borough to the north, the Northwest Arctic Borough and the Denali Borough to the west, the Fairbanks North Star Borough and the Southeast Fairbanks Census Area to the south, and the Valdez-Cordova Census Area and the Copper River Census Area to the east.
Demographics[edit | edit source]
As of the 2010 census, there were 5,588 people, 2,198 households, and 1,395 families residing in the census area. The racial makeup of the census area was 24.27% White, 0.09% Black or African American, 70.89% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.43% from other races, and 3.91% from two or more races. 1.19% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Healthcare in Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area[edit | edit source]
Healthcare in the Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area is primarily provided by the Tanana Chiefs Conference, which operates the Chief Andrew Isaac Health Center in Fairbanks and the Edgar Nollner Health Center in Galena. These facilities offer a range of services, including primary care, dental care, behavioral health services, and specialty care referrals.
The Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation also provides healthcare services in the area, operating the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta Regional Hospital in Bethel. This hospital offers emergency care, inpatient and outpatient services, and specialty clinics.
In addition to these facilities, there are several smaller clinics and health centers throughout the census area, many of which are operated by the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium.
