ZIP codes is a code of letters and digits added to a postal address to aid in the sorting of mail.

ZIP code or Zone Improvement Plan, is a term used in the United States to denote a United States Postal Service (USPS) postal area.

Not areal features[edit | edit source]

USPS ZIP Codes are not areal features but a collection of mail delivery routes.

Purpose of the ZIP code[edit | edit source]

The USPS ZIP Codes identify the individual post office or metropolitan area delivery station associated with mailing addresses.
