Cancerquest

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Cancerquest is a comprehensive resource that provides detailed information about various types of cancer, their causes, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. It is a valuable tool for both medical professionals and the general public who are seeking to understand more about this complex group of diseases.

Introduction[edit | edit source]

Cancer is a group of diseases characterized by the uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells. There are over 100 different types of cancer, and each is classified by the type of cell that is initially affected. Cancer harms the body when altered cells divide uncontrollably to form lumps or masses of tissue called tumors (except in the case of leukemia where cancer prohibits normal blood function by abnormal cell division in the blood stream).

Causes[edit | edit source]

Cancer is caused by changes (mutations) to the DNA within cells. The DNA inside a cell is packaged into a large number of individual genes, each of which contains a set of instructions telling the cell what functions to perform, as well as how to grow and divide. Errors in the instructions can cause the cell to stop its normal function and may allow a cell to become cancerous.

Symptoms[edit | edit source]

Symptoms of cancer depend on the type and location of the tumor. Common symptoms include fatigue, unexplained weight loss, pain that does not go away, and skin changes.

Diagnosis[edit | edit source]

Cancer diagnosis begins with a thorough physical exam and a complete medical history. Laboratory studies of blood, urine, and stool can detect abnormalities that may indicate cancer. When a tumor is suspected, imaging tests such as X-rays, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasound, and fiber-optic endoscopy examinations help doctors determine the cancer's location and size.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

Cancer treatment depends on the type of cancer, the stage of the cancer (how much it has spread), age, health status, and additional personal characteristics. There is no single treatment for cancer, and patients often receive a combination of therapies and palliative care. Treatments usually fall into one of the following categories: surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, hormone therapy, or gene therapy.

Prevention[edit | edit source]

Cancer prevention is action taken to lower the risk of getting cancer. This can include maintaining a healthy lifestyle, avoiding exposure to known cancer-causing substances, and taking medicines or vaccines that can prevent cancer from developing.
