Cosmetic surgery is a type of plastic surgery that aims to improve a person's appearance, but it should be approached with caution. Cosmetic surgery continues to grow in popularity, with 15.1 million cosmetic procedures carried out in the United States in 2013, an increase of 3 percent on the previous year.

Types of Cosmetic Surgery

Cosmetic surgery procedures include:

• Rhinoplasty: Also known as a "nose job," this procedure can be performed to correct a structural deformity (such as a bump or hook), to improve your appearance by making subtle changes to your nose size and shape, or to correct a functional problem (difficulty breaking due to a deviated septum).

• Breast augmentation: This procedure involves using breast implants to increase the size of the breasts or restore breast volume that has been lost after weight reduction or pregnancy.

• Liposuction: This is a procedure that removes fat deposits from various parts of the body. Liposuction can be performed on the abdomen, thighs, buttocks, and arms.

• Eyelid surgery: This procedure, also known as blepharoplasty, is often done to improve droopy eyelids or bags under the eyes.

• Tummy tuck: Also known as abdominoplasty, a tummy tuck is used to remove excess fat and skin in the abdominal area. The procedure also helps to restore weakened or separated muscles in the abdomen.

• Facelift: This is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of excess facial skin to promote a more youthful appearance. Neck lifts are often performed in conjunction with facelifts.

Risks and Complications

Like any surgery, cosmetic procedures come with risks and potential complications. These may include infection, scarring, anesthesia complications, and dissatisfaction with the results.

Choosing a Surgeon

It's important to choose a surgeon who is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Doctors who are board-certified have completed a minimum of five years of surgical training, including two years specifically in plastic surgery, and have passed comprehensive written and oral exams.
